About
Walking is better with somewhere to get to.
A mile around the block feels like nothing. Forty of them, from five neighbours, put a pin past Toledo. Commonmile turns the walking people already do into a shared trip with a map, stops and an arrival.
Who it is for
Neighbours on the same street, a family spread across a few houses, coworkers on a lunch walk, friends who meet at the track or walk the mall in winter. It is made with Garfield Heights in mind, so every journey starts here, but any group can use it.
How the distances work
Each journey is a list of stops with their map coordinates (city centres, plus two Cleveland landmarks: Public Square and Edgewater Park). The distance between two stops is the great-circle distance between those points, worked out with the haversine formula on an Earth of radius 3,958.8 miles: the distance as the crow flies. Real roads and trails are longer. The journeys are goals to walk toward at home, not routes to follow.
What it is not
- It is unofficial and independent. It is not the City of Garfield Heights, its schools, council, parks or recreation department, and it does not speak for any of them.
- It is not Garfield United, the nonprofit in Garfield, New Jersey, and is not connected to it. The domain garfieldunited.org is only this site’s address.
- It is not a charity walk or fundraiser, and it is not a nonprofit. It asks for no donations.
- It is not a fitness tracker or medical advice. It counts what you type. If you are starting to walk more than you do now, check with your doctor first.
Who runs it
Commonmile is made and run by WeldonPC.com, a computer services company in Garfield Heights, Ohio. It needs no staff to run: crews look after themselves.
